If you have children or care for them, you are always looking for safe and fun places for them to release energy. I made it one of my goals to find cool playgrounds and outdoor places to go last summer, here were a few:
Purgatory Chasm- Sutton, MA
This is a wonderful place for all ages. There is a small playground, a bathroom (always a plus), hiking trails, and for the older kids (I would say 4+ at least) hiking inside the rocks. Bring bug spray, epipens (if allergic to bees) and a lunch.
Cumberland Monastery/Library- Cumberland, RI
This playground has a few inclusive items like a molded swing and a large "tire" swing to do some vestibular fun. Has a sand box too. Bathrooms are located inside the library.
Slater Park- Pawtucket RI
This park has an area for 2-5 as well as 5-12 including a rock wall and a net climbing structure. It is mostly enclosed with some shade. It also has a little concession stand if you forgot to bring snacks and bathrooms.
Hasbro Boundless Playground @ Roger Williams Park- Providence RI
This is an inclusive playground with handicap accessible exploration. It has one of my favorites, a rollerslide. It is right next to the Carousel.
ImPossible Dream Playground- Warwick RI
The imPOSSIBLE DREAM Playground, Rhode Island's first integrated playground, offers an environment that is play friendly for children of all physical abilities. Open April through October, 10:00 to 3:00 Wednesday through Saturday, it offers a clean, safe and happy playground for all children.
World War I Memorial Park- North Attleboro MA
This place is cool. It has a large playground, a small "zoo", and a very long tube slide.
Capron Park Zoo- Attleboro MA
Yes, there is admission to the zoo, but it is cheap. But if you don't want to go into the zoo, the playground is just as fun and free.
Deerfield Park- Smithfield RI
2 playgrounds, fields for playing, walking trails. Generally just a nice park, but crowded at times.
The Sarah Jane McCullough Handicap Play Area- Wakefield RI
I have not been here yet but it states they have a poured in place safety surfacing, play panels, overhead evens and ramps, as well as a sway fun glider and elevated sand table. Let me know how it is...
Rhode Island Audubon Society Sites, statewide
Various sites from Smithfield to Bristol to Block Island... get out your hiking boots and nature guides
Colt State Park- Bristol, RI
Beautiful, waterfront park with trails and grassy knolls. There are plenty of paths for biking, walking, running, kite flying, rock skipping, and even boating....
